Multicoloured Carved Vase

This large stoneware vase was made using a hand-coiling technique, which allows for a slow, steady build-up of form. I like working this way—it’s tactile and responsive, and it gives me time to shape the piece intuitively as it grows. While the clay was still wet, I carved directly into the surface, covering the entire piece with pattern and texture. Carving at this stage feels very fluid—like drawing in three dimensions.

Once the carving was complete and the piece had dried fully, I fired it twice at over 1200°C. After the first firing, I painted each carved section with vibrant glazes. The colors settle into the textured areas, giving definition and contrast to the form. Some areas absorb more glaze than others, which brings out subtle shifts in tone and depth.

The final piece has a lively, tactile surface—rich with colour and detail. It’s decorative, but also very much about the rhythm of making: carving, painting, and layering over time.

Each item is carefully packaged using recyclable material where possible! The artwork comes wrapped in bright colours and in a sturdy box with compostable packers!
